Spring Wardrobe Focus

Spring seemed to have officially landed in LA last week…and subsequently departed. It was winter this weekend, and now summer hot today. Though the weather report tells me I will continue to need some sweaters and layers, I do know the heaviest ones of the winter season are behind me. That means rotating out my fuzzy and thickest tops including jackets and coats and my heavier shoes.

I’m also prepping imminent fond farewells to the flannel pants that are my personal space heaters. Maybe with a thin weight long sleeve tee, bare ankle and a ballet flat? It depends on the trajectory of my day and those dang temperature swings. I am certain that one by one, they will be cleaned and retired to the off-season section of my closet for their annual sabbatical.

I’m always excited to say ‘ciao for now’ to what I’ve been eyeballing and wearing for months,
and to say hello to the lighter weights I prefer as temps rise;
it’s like getting a welcome visit from good pals I haven’t seen in ages!

So what’s fun for this and every spring?

To quote Miranda Priestly, “Florals? For spring? Groundbreaking.”  While floral prints are annuals (lol), there is as much focus on the colors associated with spring florals. Solid pastels—such as Lilac, Butter Yellow, and Glacial Blue are replacing saturated brights. Also, Apricot and Navy (natural opposites on the color wheel, so automatically complementary) as well as old faithful, White.

Not into pastels? Allow me to reintroduce Black’s cousin Charcoal Grey for this season. And even if Black is your undisputed uniform, you can always pop some color you do like on a smaller scale with accessories including handbags, shoes, scarves, headbands and makeup (lipstick is my personal and easy go-to).

Other trends I’m loving this spring:

  • polo shirts and preppy staples* for all
  • high-waisted, wide leg trousers for women (and parenthesis shaped pants, which are fun but not as forever IMO)
  • metallic dresses
  • texture (think beads, wovens, fringe, feathers, sheer etc) on dresses and tops primarily, often in solid colors
  • continued 90’s minimalism for all genders. I stan, as the kids say (or at least used to…Who can keep up with those trends? Pas moi).
  • shorts – either Bermudas (casually/looser) or formal/more fitted with a blazer as suiting for all – Yes, shorts suits are a thing!
  • small crescent/hobo shape shoulder bags
  • tapered, fitted waists for men on trousers/pants and tops
  • sneakers and boat shoes for all (Y’all, there are entire swaths of the world that say these have never been out! Many are preppies, boaters or both.)
  • brooches – yes, it’s time to raid Grandma’s jewelry box! Pop them on lapels, sweaters, use as button replacements, throw on a kilt, in your hair and more.

Most of all, I am a fan of following trends only when they speak to you because they feel fun, not fake, to incorporate into your already existing wardrobe.

Whether you choose to follow any of these current trends or not, spring clothing is about turning over a new leaf, and more time outside enjoying the colors and textures nature has to flaunt. Here’s hoping the season blooms creativity, happiness and comfort both mental and physical in YOU!
